If you ask the people around you\u2014professors, architects, engineers, doctors, clergy, bankers, mayors, ministers, and even the \u201cpresident\u201d himself\u2014what \u201cLa Chakana\u201d or the \u201cSquare Cross\u201d is, the vast majority will not be able to answer you, because the vast majority do not know; the Inquisition, religion, history, and foreign education, as well as the policies of cultural eradication still in effect today and their traditions (T-erra-diccion), have seen to that. The closest thing to this term that is commonly known in the city of Lima is the \u201cgeometric\u201d symbol associated with the political party called \u201cPer\u00fa Posible,\u201d which contains the letter \u201cT\u201d within it. How sad!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201cChakana\u201d refers to a bridge, a staircase, or the steps connecting \u2018Heaven\u2019 with \u201cEarth,\u201d which can also be seen in the word \u201cChakaruna,\u201d which refers to man as a connecting bridge between both worlds. Over time, it has also been given similar names such as \u201cChinkana\u201d and \u201cChikama,\u201d depending on whether it points upward or downward. I met an elder named \u201cQenko\u201d who calls it \u201cToqe,\u201d and as we will see, it is also called \u201cTawa\u2019Chunka,\u201d which on one hand refers to the number 40 and on the other, to the circumference of 4\u221a10 or 12.6488 cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also known as \u201cTawaChakana,\u201d a term that refers to the \u201cfour staircases\u201d or the \u201cfour sides\u201d of the \u2018square\u2019 or \u201cTawaTinkuy,\u201d which refers to the \u201cfour forces\u201d that come together or meet. In summary, the term \u201cChakana\u201d and all its related terms refer to the \u201csymbol\u201d or \u201cgeometric structure\u201d that allows us to observe and measure the movement of the \u201cPachakamaykuna Forces,\u201d the forces of \u2018nature\u2019 or the \u201cCreative\u201d forces, among which we have primarily the forces of \u201cTaytaInti\u201d and the forces of \u201cMamaKilla.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To know the \u201cChakana\u201d is to know movement; it is to know the threads of creation; it is to know time; it is to know about the seasons and changes in temperature; it is to know the code of the \u201cmuhu\u201d or \u2018seed\u2019 and of your own \u201cseed,\u201d and how it germinates, grows, and develops \u201cnaturally.\u201d To know about the \u201cChakana\u201d is to know \u201cnature\u201d and the elements, their properties and \u2018natures\u2019; in short, it is to know about \u201clife\u201d and its movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
